Turned local business reviews into video and audio stories, helping Italian users find trusted spots nearby.
Project Snapshot
The Challenge
Text-based review platforms had become noisy and low-trust for Italian consumers deciding where to eat, shop, or spend their time. Star ratings and short text blurbs could be gamed or felt impersonal, and users increasingly wanted to see and hear a real person's reaction before trusting a recommendation. There was no mainstream app letting everyday users capture a genuine video or audio reaction on the spot and attach it to a specific local business.
The client's vision was "ComemiTrovo" — literally "how I find myself/how I feel" — a review platform built around authentic multimedia testimony rather than star ratings alone. The challenge was structural: most review apps default to text forms, and retrofitting fast, in-the-moment video and audio capture onto a review flow without friction is a genuinely hard UX problem. Users needed to go from "I'm standing in this café" to "my review is live" in under a minute, on a mobile network, without the process feeling like producing a mini-documentary.
Without this, the business cost was clear: users would abandon reviews half-written, local merchants would get thin, low-signal feedback, and the app's entire differentiator — authentic community experience — would collapse into another forgettable directory. The team also needed location intelligence baked in from day one, since "how I feel about this place" is meaningless without accurate proximity and mapping.
Technical constraints included variable mobile bandwidth for video uploads, the need for smooth camera/mic permission handling across iOS versions, and building a category taxonomy flexible enough to cover restaurants, retail, services, and more without becoming unwieldy.
Our Solution
We designed ComemiTrovo around three review formats — video, audio, and text — presented as equal, one-tap entry points rather than a text form with video "bolted on." The home screen surfaces Audio, Video, Scrivi (Write), and Vedi recensioni (View reviews) as large circular actions, so the fastest path to contributing is also the most visible.
The video-review flow was the most technically involved: an in-app camera with a 15-second capture window, live flash/timer/audio toggle controls, and an immediate save screen where users add a title and description before publishing or "liking" their own capture. We optimized capture-to-upload with client-side compression tuned for cellular networks, so a review shot outside a shop uploads before the moment passes.
Discovery is organized around "Cosa ti serve?" (What do you need?) — a category grid using photographic tiles rather than icons, which tested better for a lifestyle-oriented, visually driven audience — plus a dedicated "Vicino a te" (Near you) map view built on native maps with clustered pins and quick-preview callouts for each merchant. A unified search screen lets users pivot between browsing by Categoria, Recensioni, or Like, with distance shown in km per result so proximity is always front and center.
On the backend, we built a merchant/location data model that ties every review to a geocoded business entity, supports like-counting and ranking, and exposes a lightweight moderation queue so the platform could scale community content without losing quality control. The app shipped first on iOS with an Android release following in the same phase, both sharing the same API layer.
The Impact
ComemiTrovo launched as one of the first mainstream apps in its market to treat video and audio as first-class review formats rather than an afterthought. Early adoption data showed video reviews driving noticeably higher engagement than text-only entries, with users spending more time per session browsing community content than on comparable text-review apps.
Illustrative results: average review-capture-to-publish time under 90 seconds, a meaningfully higher completion rate for started reviews versus industry text-form benchmarks, and steady growth in merchant listings driven by users adding "Categoria" tiles for businesses not yet on the platform. The roadmap ahead focuses on creator-style profiles for top reviewers and richer merchant response tools.

“Watching real people react on camera, right outside the shop, gave our reviews a trust factor text alone never had.”
