The Challenge

Business Search's client ran a regional print business directory and watched, year over year, as searches migrated from the phone book to the phone. Their existing web listings had no mobile presence worth mentioning, and competitors with modern apps were capturing the exact category-based searches — banks, ATMs, accountants, auto repair — that had once been the print directory's bread and butter.

The brief was to compress an entire Yellow Pages-style directory into a mobile-first experience that felt fast rather than exhaustive. Users searching for "ATM Locator" or "Auto Electricians" while out and about have near-zero patience for a slow or cluttered interface, so the challenge was distilling dozens of business categories into a browsing experience that still felt simple on a single home screen.

There was also a monetization tension baked into the brief: the directory's revenue model depended on advertiser visibility and business listings claiming their profiles, but overloading the app with promotional placement risked undermining the very trust that made users choose the directory over a generic map search in the first place.

A further constraint came from the client's existing print and signage partners, several of whom had already distributed QR codes referencing the directory on physical collateral — meaning the new app needed built-in QR scanning from day one, not as a future add-on, so those existing offline touchpoints would not go to waste.

Our Solution

We designed Business Search around a single organizing idea: get the user from "what am I looking for" to "here's the closest match" in the fewest possible taps. The home screen surfaces Search, QR Reader, and Favorite as primary actions above a scrollable grid of category icons — Banks, ATM Locator, Accountants, Auto Recyclers, Auto Electricians, Application Repair — each rendered as a clean circular icon so the whole directory reads as scannable at a glance rather than as a list to sift through.

Underneath that grid, we built a geolocation-aware backend that automatically detects and displays the user's current city, letting every category search default to proximity-sorted results without requiring manual location entry. Search results for any category, such as the ATM Locator flow, show distance, full address, and a one-tap favorite star, so users can compare nearby options and save the ones they will want again without leaving the results screen.

The QR Reader was built as a first-class feature rather than a buried utility, tying directly into the client's existing offline signage strategy — scanning a code embedded in a flyer or storefront sign resolves straight into an in-app business or informational listing, connecting print-era marketing spend to the new digital product.

We kept the visual identity warm and approachable, using the directory's existing orange-and-black branding across a dark, high-contrast interface so category icons stood out clearly against the background, and reserved the Settings screen for the lower-frequency actions — change city, auto-sync, advertiser inquiries, feedback — that did not need to compete for space on the primary navigation surface. The build shipped as a single production release rather than a phased rollout, since the client needed full category coverage live in time for a coordinated marketing push tied to their print partners.

The Impact

Business Search launched with full category coverage across the client's initial regional market and quickly became the client's primary channel for directory traffic, overtaking their legacy web listings within the first quarter post-launch. The QR Reader feature saw meaningful adoption directly tied to existing print signage, validating the offline-to-app bridge the client had been counting on.

Favorite-star usage indicated strong repeat engagement, with a large share of active users returning to previously saved listings rather than re-searching from scratch, a good signal for the directory's advertiser-renewal pitch. Auto-sync kept category and business data fresh without requiring app updates, reducing support overhead significantly.

The client is now exploring an advertiser self-service portal to sit on top of the same backend, extending the platform beyond search into managed business listings.
