The Challenge
Triber's founders had a sharp observation about festivals and large public events: the people you actually want to find — friends, friends-of-friends, and fellow fans — are often just a few hundred meters away, but completely invisible to each other in a crowd of tens of thousands. Before iMobdev, that observation had no product behind it, just a name and a pitch about a "community compass."
The core challenge was building proximity awareness that felt safe, not creepy. Users needed to see who nearby had opted in to be found, request a live "peering" connection, and get walking directions to a meeting point — all without leaking exact GPS coordinates to strangers by default. On top of that, the app had to support public and private tribes (festival crowds, brand communities, friend groups) with different join rules, member counts running into the tens of thousands, and a live chat layer that stayed fast during the exact high-density moments — main-stage sets, closing acts — when networks are most congested.
Without a reliable version of this live, the founders had no way to demonstrate the core loop to festival organizers and sponsor partners they were courting for on-site launch partnerships. A social app that only worked in a quiet office demo was not fundable.
Technically, the team was also committed to a native-feeling experience on both iOS and Android from day one, since festival attendees skew toward whichever platform they already have installed, with no room to make either feel like an afterthought.
Our Solution
iMobdev framed Triber around three connected loops — Tribes, Peering, and Meeting Points — and built the app so each one reinforces the others instead of competing for attention on the home screen.
The client apps were built natively for iOS and Android, backed by a real-time services layer using Node.js, Socket.io, and MongoDB, with Redis handling presence and live proximity state so peering requests and "who's nearby" updates arrive in under a second even during peak festival load. Push notifications were wired through native channels so a peering request or an incoming message reaches a phone in someone's pocket, not just an open app.
On the UX side, we designed a bottom tab structure — Peering, Meeting, Tribes, Notifications, Chat — so the three core loops are always one tap away, with a consistent gold-and-charcoal brand mark anchoring every screen header. The tribes list uses a two-way toggle between "My tribes" and "Public tribes" so joining a new festival community never requires leaving the screen you're already on, and a live map view puts meeting points and peering status directly on the terrain instead of behind a menu.
For the data layer, tribe membership, join/leave state, and per-member friend counts sync against a central directory service, while each tribe's activity feed and chat thread are scoped independently so a 34,000-member public tribe doesn't bottleneck a five-person private one. Location sharing defaults to opt-in "peering" requests rather than always-on broadcast, keeping user trust central to the design rather than bolted on.
Delivery ran in three phases: peering and meeting points shipped first as the differentiating MVP, tribes and public discovery followed once the core loop was validated, and the final phase focused on push reliability and load testing ahead of a planned festival-season launch.
The Impact
Triber launched with a working proximity-and-community loop that let the founders demo the exact experience festival organizers cared about: find your people, meet up, and keep talking, all inside one app with zero manual coordination. The tribes structure gave Triber a growth channel beyond one-to-one peering, letting festival and brand communities onboard tens of thousands of attendees under a single public tribe.
The real-time infrastructure held up under the concurrent-user spikes that had previously only existed as a risk on a whiteboard, giving the founders performance data to bring into sponsor conversations. iMobdev continues to support Triber as it expands into new event categories beyond music festivals.
