The Challenge
Scholario Learning came to iMobdev with a problem every parent and teacher recognizes: students were getting homework answers from search engines and chatbots, but not the understanding behind them. Copying a final answer got an assignment turned in, but it left gaps that showed up on the next test. The founding team, a group of former classroom teachers, wanted to build something different — a mobile tutor that would never just hand over an answer, but walk a student through the reasoning to get there.
The hard part was doing this at the pace and patience level of an actual tutor. Off-the-shelf chatbot integrations tended to either over-explain simple problems or skip steps on harder ones, and neither built the kind of step-by-step scaffolding that actually improves retention. Scholario needed a system that could recognize what subject and sub-topic a question belonged to, break the solution into the right number of steps for that student's level, and adapt if the student got stuck partway through.
Just as important was keeping students motivated over the long run. Homework help apps have a well-known churn problem: kids use them once for a hard assignment and never come back. Scholario wanted daily engagement built around streaks, mastery tracking, and a visible study plan, not just a one-off Q&A box.
The result had to work across at least four subject areas at launch — Algebra, Chemistry, Essay Writing, and Physics — with a UI simple enough for a middle schooler to use unsupervised, while still giving parents and the student a clear picture of where knowledge gaps actually were.
Our Solution
iMobdev designed Scholario around three connected experiences: a subject-based home screen, a step-by-step AI tutor chat, and a progress system that turns every session into visible mastery data. The home screen greets students with their current streak and a quick "continue where you left off" card, so returning to the app always feels like picking up momentum rather than starting cold.
The tutoring engine is built on the OpenAI API (GPT-4 class models) for step decomposition and natural-language explanation, paired with a custom problem-classification layer that first identifies the subject, topic, and difficulty of a submitted question before generating a response — this is what lets the same underlying model explain a quadratic equation in four clean steps but expand a five-paragraph essay outline into a longer, more scaffolded walkthrough. Chemistry and Physics questions route through a symbolic math and unit-checking layer built on SymPy to keep numeric answers verifiably correct before they ever reach the student.
Beyond the chat interface, we built an adaptive practice-quiz mode that pulls follow-up questions from the same topic a student just asked about, closing the loop between "getting help" and "proving you learned it." Every quiz result, chat session, and completed study-plan item feeds a mastery model that renders as simple progress rings per subject and a weekly study-time chart, giving students (and parents) an honest picture of where more work is needed.
Finally, the study plan screen turns Scholario from a reactive tool into a daily habit: a lightweight recommendation engine schedules short, spaced-out sessions across the week based on upcoming tests and weak topics, and completed sessions feed straight back into the mastery dashboard.
The Impact
Scholario launched with 14 school partnerships in its first semester, and pilot classrooms using the app saw an average 34% improvement in quiz scores on topics students had used the tutor for, compared to topics studied without it. Daily active usage held well above typical homework-help benchmarks, driven largely by the streak system and study-plan reminders.
iMobdev continues to work with Scholario on expanding subject coverage into Biology and Geometry, along with a parent-facing dashboard for tracking progress across multiple children.

“Our students stopped asking Scholario for answers and started asking it for explanations — that shift alone changed how they showed up to class.”
