The Challenge

An independent kids-app studio approached iMobdev with a simple but underserved idea: a bright, character-led app that teaches preschoolers the alphabet and numbers 0–10 through tracing and play, instead of flashcards or worksheets. Before iMobdev, the studio had character artwork and a rough level list, but nothing a parent could actually hand to a child.

The pain points were specific to the age group. There was no forgiving, touch-first interaction model — young kids needed big, tolerant tracing targets and instant positive feedback, not a fiddly interface built for adults. There was no structured progression between uppercase, lowercase, and number levels that would keep a 3-to-6-year-old engaged without overwhelming them. And the studio needed a soft monetization path — a free tier generous enough to prove value, with a single, unintimidating "Buy Full Version" upgrade rather than a confusing subscription.

Every month without a polished app was a month of losing shelf space to competing letter-tracing apps already established in app store search results, in a category where parents decide in seconds based on first impressions and reviews.

Our Solution

iMobdev's approach centered the entire app around its two child mascots and a single, consistent illustrated world — a sky-blue skyline and green hillside — so every screen, from the title arch to the settings menu, felt like one continuous storybook rather than a stitched-together app.

We built the app natively for iOS and Android with a lightweight local content model: each letter, lowercase letter, and number is a self-contained level bundled with the app, so there's zero load time and no dependency on a network connection — critical for a young audience using a parent's phone anywhere, offline included. A simple three-path menu (A to Z, a to z, 0 to 10) keeps navigation obvious enough for a child to choose independently.

On the UX side, every tracing screen uses one oversized glyph as the entire play surface, with a persistent "Hint" button that replays a guided stroke animation on demand, so a child never gets stuck without a path forward. Buttons are large, rounded, and color-coded — blue for navigation, orange for actions, red reserved only for the upgrade prompt — keeping the interface legible to a pre-reader.

For settings and monetization, we built a straightforward options screen covering language, difficulty level, hint/direction toggles, and stroke order, plus a single "Buy Full Version" entry point so parents can unlock the complete letter and number set without navigating a storefront mid-session.

Delivery was a single streamlined build: core tracing engine and level content first, menus and settings second, with device and tablet-size testing rounding out the project before app store submission.

The Impact

Letters & Numbers launched as a complete, self-contained learning app that a parent can hand to a preschooler with no setup and no supervision required for basic navigation. The offline-first level design meant the app worked anywhere, and the single-tier upgrade path gave the studio a clean, low-friction way to convert free users. The finished product gave the studio a real app store listing to compete on, rather than a concept. iMobdev remains available to extend the level library as the studio adds new content packs.
