The Challenge

Norfolk Island's tourism board had decades of local knowledge — every beach, walking trail, gallery, restaurant, and tour operator on the island — but no single place for a visitor to find it. Before iMobdev, that knowledge lived across brochures, a dated website, and word of mouth from locals. A tourist landing on the island had no easy way to plan a day without asking at the front desk.

The pain points were specific. Visitors needed one browsable directory covering beaches, walks, galleries, museums, restaurants, and experiences, each with real contact details, hours, and location — not a scanned PDF. The island's guided experiences, from the Fletcher's Mutiny Cyclorama to ranger-led walks, needed a bookable, discoverable home alongside the self-guided content. And because Norfolk Island's mobile data can be patchy, the app had to feel fast and complete offline-first, not dependent on a constant connection to a booking engine.

Every season without a proper app meant visitors under-using what the island actually offered — shorter stays, fewer bookings for local tour operators, and a tourism board unable to measure what people were actually looking at. The board needed a modern, single-download experience it could point every visitor to on arrival.

Technically, the content itself was the challenge: dozens of categories and hundreds of individual listings, each with photos, descriptions, and contact details, needed a data structure flexible enough for the tourism board's own staff to keep updated without engineering help.

Our Solution

iMobdev framed Explore Norfolk Island as a single pocket concierge: open the app, see the island's categories at a glance, and drill into any listing without ever feeling lost. That framing drove a deliberately simple information architecture from the very first screen.

On the architecture side, we built a native iOS app with a lightweight content-management layer behind it, so the tourism board's own team can add, edit, or retire listings — a new gallery, an updated phone number, a seasonal walk closure — without touching code. Listing data, categories, and imagery are structured so the same content model powers Beaches, Walks, Galleries & Museums, Eat, and Experiences without one-off screens for each.

On the UX side, the home screen leads with a clean icon grid for the island's core categories, backed by a persistent search bar and a "Nearby Locations" panel that surfaces what's actually close to the visitor. Category browsing uses a photo-forward card layout so a beach or trailhead sells itself before a visitor taps in, and every listing detail view follows the same pattern: hero photo, name and address, an overview write-up, direct call/website/email contact actions, and an embedded map — consistent enough that visitors never have to relearn the interface between a beach and a gallery.

For discovery beyond static listings, we built a dedicated Audio Tours section anchored by the "Island Explorer Tour," giving visitors a self-guided narrated option alongside the browsable directory, and a categorized Experiences tab that separates bookable tours (Fletcher's Mutiny Cyclorama, ranger-guided walks, fishing charters) from the passive sightseeing content.

Delivery was phased around content readiness: the core navigation and Beaches/Walks categories shipped first as the visible MVP, Galleries, Eat, and Experiences followed once the tourism board's content was migrated, and Audio Tours launched last alongside the CMS handover so the board's team could manage content independently going forward.

The Impact

Explore Norfolk Island gave the tourism board a single, modern front door for visitors — replacing scattered brochures and a static website with one app covering beaches, walks, galleries, dining, and bookable experiences. The consistent listing format means a visitor can move from a beach card to a gallery's contact details without any friction, and the CMS-backed content model lets the board's own staff keep listings current without waiting on a development cycle.

With Audio Tours and categorized Experiences now live alongside the core directory, the island has a foundation to keep layering in new self-guided content and tour-operator partnerships. iMobdev continues to support the tourism board as new categories and audio content are added.
