The Challenge

A well-known nurse educator and author had spent years building a reputation as a trusted voice for critical care nursing certification, but her CCRN exam-prep materials existed only as books, workshops, and a static companion website. Nurses studying for the Critical Care Registered Nurse exam wanted something they could pull out during a break on a hospital floor, not a textbook they had to carry or a desktop site they had to sit down for.

The exam itself covers a dense spread of clinical domains — cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological, renal, gastrointestinal, endocrine, hematology and immunology, multisystem conditions, and professional/ethical practice — and nurses preparing for it are simultaneously working full clinical shifts. That meant the product's biggest constraint was not content depth, since the educator already had that in abundance, but session length and cognitive load: every study session had to be usable in five spare minutes without feeling like it interrupted a real workflow.

There was also a monetization structure to design around. The educator wanted a "question of the day" free entry point to build trust and habit, with the full, system-by-system review content sold as individual paid modules, so the app needed a clean free-to-paid upgrade path that did not feel like a bait-and-switch to nurses who were already stretched thin on both time and money.

Beyond the product decisions, the content itself carried real stakes: every question and rationale needed to be clinically accurate and clearly sourced, since a wrong or poorly explained answer in a certification-prep app carries reputational risk for both the educator and, indirectly, for patient care outcomes downstream.

Our Solution

iMobdev structured CCRN Review around three simple entry points on the home screen — Question of the Day, CCRN Review, and a link out to the educator's existing Greatnurses.com resource hub — so a nurse with two minutes and a nurse with twenty both have an obvious place to start. We built the branding around the educator's own name and photo, front and center, since her personal credibility was the product's core trust signal in a crowded field of anonymous exam-prep apps.

The Question of the Day flow was designed as a lightweight, swipeable card: a clinical scenario, multiple-choice answers, and a rationale screen that only appears after an answer is selected, reinforcing learning through immediate feedback rather than passive reading. We used a warm coral-to-red gradient throughout the quiz interface, consistent with the educator's existing brand color, to keep the whole product feeling like a continuation of a trusted resource rather than a bolted-on tech product.

The CCRN Review module organizes content into a "My List" of active study systems and a "New list" of purchasable system-specific packs — Renal, Gastrointestinal, Endocrine, Hematology & Immunology, Multisystem Conditions, Professional Caring & Ethical Practice — each priced and sold individually through in-app purchase. This a-la-carte structure let nurses buy only the systems they felt weakest in rather than a single expensive bundle, directly matching how the educator's own students told her they wanted to study.

We built a stats dashboard tracking correct-versus-wrong answers as a percentage-complete ring, giving nurses a persistent, honest signal of exam readiness along with Reset Stats and Retake Test controls so the app could be used for repeated practice runs rather than a single pass-through. All question content, rationales, and system categorization were built on a structured content-management backend the educator's team could update independently as exam blueprints changed, without needing an app update for every content revision.

The Impact

CCRN Review launched with the full nine-system question bank and immediately became the mobile extension of the educator's existing brand, converting a meaningful share of Question-of-the-Day users into paid system-pack purchasers within their first week of use. The free daily question consistently drove the highest open rates in the app, validating it as the intended low-friction entry point into paid content.

Average quiz-completion rates stayed high across sessions, and the stats dashboard became one of the most-viewed screens in the app, with many users returning specifically to watch their correct-answer percentage climb over repeated attempts. Support requests around content accuracy were minimal, reflecting the strength of the underlying clinical material.

With a scalable content backend now in place, the educator's team is positioned to extend the same app into companion certifications beyond CCRN.
