The Challenge

Most mental wellness apps ask users to journal into a void — a blank text box with no response, no continuity, and no sense that anyone, or anything, is actually listening. Engagement drops off fast: 30-day retention for meditation and journaling apps sits well below other consumer categories, largely because the habit has no feedback loop to keep it going.

Calmwave's founders, a clinical psychologist and a product designer who had both worked in digital health, wanted to build something closer to a daily companion than a content library. Their research kept surfacing the same gap: people didn't need more guided meditations, they needed something that noticed patterns in their mood over time and responded to them personally, in the moment, without waiting for a weekly summary email.

They approached iMobdev to build a mobile app around three habits that reinforce each other — a quick daily mood check-in, a conversational AI companion for the harder days, and short guided sessions for in-the-moment regulation — all wrapped in an interface calm enough that opening the app didn't feel like one more notification to manage.

The hardest part was tone. A wellness AI that sounds clinical feels cold, and one that overreaches into therapy territory is irresponsible. We needed conversation design, not just app design, to get that balance right before a single line of production code was written.

Our Solution

We built Calmwave around a single daily loop: check in, reflect, and — when needed — talk it through. The home screen opens with a five-option mood selector and a one-line daily reflection prompt, both designed to take under fifteen seconds, because the biggest barrier to a wellness habit is friction at the very first tap.

The AI companion, which users name during onboarding, runs on the OpenAI API with a custom conversational system prompt developed alongside Calmwave's clinical advisor, so responses stay warm and reflective rather than clinical or prescriptive. Conversation memory is handled through a lightweight vector store built on Pinecone, letting the companion reference a user's mood history and past check-ins naturally — "I noticed you logged a stressed morning" — without ever storing or surfacing raw journal text outside the user's own account. A rules-based safety layer sits in front of every response and immediately routes any message showing signs of crisis language to a static, always-visible set of professional crisis resources, ahead of any AI-generated reply.

Guided sessions are short by design — three to ten minutes — and built around a breathing-pace visual cue that expands and contracts on screen in sync with an inhale-hold-exhale rhythm, paired with ambient audio delivered over a WebSocket-based streaming connection to keep playback perfectly in sync with the visual.

The Insights screen turns two to four weeks of mood check-ins into a simple trend chart and a short, specific written observation rather than a generic "you're doing great" message, so the pattern-noticing the founders wanted became a core, visible feature rather than a backend detail.

Every journal entry is automatically tagged with a detected mood, so a user scrolling their history can see the shape of a hard month at a glance, not just a wall of text.

The Impact

Since launch, Calmwave users complete their daily check-in far more consistently than category benchmarks, and the AI companion has become the single most-used feature in the app — most active users send at least one message a day, often in the evening.

iMobdev and the Calmwave team are now scoping a wearable integration that would let heart-rate signals from a paired smartwatch quietly suggest a breathing session before a user even opens the app, plus a "shared reflection" feature for therapists whose clients opt to bring their mood trends into a session. The clinical advisory relationship that shaped the companion's tone from day one remains active, reviewing conversation patterns each quarter as the user base grows.

Calmwave doesn't feel like software you have to remember to use — it feels like it remembers you. iMobdev built an AI companion that our users describe as checking in on them, which is exactly the emotional bar we set out to hit.
