The Challenge
ajolive set out to build a "music network" — a single mobile home for an artist where fans could stream the full catalog, watch videos, browse photos and follow news, all under one branded roof. Their flagship launch was the official app for Swedish rapper Timbuktu, "the rapper even your grandma knows." Before iMobdev, that artist presence was scattered across a website, a store listing and social pages that nobody opened twice.
The core problem was engagement, not awareness. Fans had no single destination that combined listening, video, and news with a path to purchase. Each release meant pointing fans to yet another link, and there was no recurring reason to reopen the app between albums. Content updates were manual and slow, so the experience felt stale within weeks of every launch.
Commercially this capped revenue: discovery happened off-platform, so in-app purchase conversion was effectively zero and the label had no first-party data on what fans actually played. Every week without a unified, sticky app was a week of lost monetization and lost audience signal.
Technically, the app had to run smoothly on early iPhone hardware over slow mobile networks, stream audio reliably, support Apple in-app purchase, and let non-technical label staff push new albums, videos and news without an app update.
Our Solution
We framed ajolive as a reusable, white-label music-network platform rather than a one-off artist app — one codebase and content backend that could be re-skinned per artist, with Timbuktu as the flagship release.
The app shell is built natively in Objective-C on Cocoa Touch with a tile-based home hub routing fans into five sections — Music, Videos, Photos and News — so the most valuable actions are one tap from launch. Audio streaming and the full-screen player run on AVFoundation, tuned to buffer gracefully on slow connections, with a persistent "now playing" bar so playback follows the fan across the app.
Browsing is organized around the artist's discography: an album catalog drills into track lists with duration, ordering and a clear in-app BUY action wired to StoreKit for compliant purchases. Catalog, artwork and metadata are cached locally with Core Data so repeat sessions open instantly and tolerate flaky signal.
All content is driven by a lightweight PHP/MySQL backend exposing a REST API, so label staff publish new albums, videos and news from a simple CMS with zero app releases. The News section uses Apple Push Notification service to re-engage fans the moment a drop or tour date lands — the recurring hook the old setup lacked.
We shipped in phases: core player and catalog first, then video, photos and an artist-bio module, then push-driven news — letting the label launch fast and layer engagement features on a stable base.
The Impact
The flagship app reached an estimated +25,000 downloads in its first month and settled at a 4.7★ App Store rating, validating the network model for rollout to additional artists. Fans engaged with an average 11-minute session, browsing a catalog of 1,200+ tracks across albums, video and news rather than bouncing after a single play.
Push-driven news turned one-time installers into repeat visitors, lifting return-session rate and giving the label its first first-party data on what fans actually listened to. Most importantly, in-app BUY moved purchase into the same surface as discovery, opening a direct monetization path that the scattered web presence never had.
With one white-label codebase proven in market, ajolive was positioned to onboard the next artists in weeks rather than months.
